Crossing Guard Information
Published on Sep 10, 2018 12:05

A notice from the City of Orillia:

All Crossing Guards across the City will be present in all school cross walks during the following times on school days:
• From 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. for school commencement and
• From 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for school dismissal.
When the lights are flashing in school zones, the speed limit is reduced to 40 km/hour. These lights will be flashing at all times when a crossing guard is present. Motorists are reminded to slow down when approaching all school crossings.
Since January, 2016, drivers have been required by law to wait for pedestrians (including the Crossing Guard) to safely arrive on the side of the street before proceeding into cross walks. Starting August 30, 2018, penalties have increased for drivers who fail to yield for pedestrians at crosswalks, crossovers and school crossings from $150 to $300 and from three to four demerit points. For repeat offenders, the fine range will be $500-$1000 and four demerit points.

Parents and students are reminded to use the crosswalk on their way to and from school to ensure their safety.
